I am looking for some advice on how to travel light on our three week trip to New England in October.
I really don't want to be hindered by too much stuff and I am wondering if there are any good idea's out there? I'm also looking for clothing that will travel well and not need any ironing, or at least just need a minimum of ironing. I learnt my lesson when we went to Turkey, I packed far too much and I am not doing that again.
I'm also looking to plan the rest of our trip. We are spending three days in Boston at the beginning and four days in New York at the end. So we will have forteen days in between and we cannot decide what route to take. There is so much we want to see but have to be sensible. It is pointless driving for hours each day and just being shattered at the end of the day. I would like to stop over two or three nights in three or four places.
We both love lighthouses so we are thinking of travelling up the coast and come back down to Boston further in land. We will then travel to New York by train. So any idea's folks? I am planning on getting all the accomodation sorted before the end of July. Again if you know of any delightful and reasonably price places to stay I would be very happy to hear from you.

I live in Connecticut and a nice area to visit here is Mystic. There's an aquarium, an old seaport, a very nice small town for walking through, shopping and restaurants. And not sure if it's of interest to you but there is 2 very large casino's locted very close to Mystic also.
One of my favorite places to get away to is the Southern Maine area, Ogunquit, Portland, Kennebunkport. I'm actually headed to Ogunquit next month for a long weekend. You may also like to check out the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts. In the area of Stockbridge there's a place called the Red Lion Inn that is supposed to be a very nice inn, I'm not sure what the pricing is that time of year but the foliage should be beautiful in October. I pack all stuff that mixes and matches in layers and as few items as possible. Then I just do laundry in the hotel if I need to.
Some tricks we learned dragging our kids throughout Asia.
Plan to use a laundry service while abroad. It's worth every cent.
Bring disposable clothing - knickers (do you like my British????) that you were thinking of throwing out, blouses that are ready to hit the trash. Wear them on days you don't have to look great and throw them out once you've worn them, then you have room for gifts etc.
We learned to roll our clothing - way less wrinkling and to put dryer sheets (fabric softener) in between layers of clothes in order to keep fresh.

If you're in Boston, I highly recommend seeing the Salem/Marblehead area... particularly in October! I went the same time last year, and had a wonderful time. If you go on my archives, you can see some photos of the trip!

It's not historic, but I love the Extended Stay Hotels.
They have a little kitchen, like a little flat.
And the rates are cheaper by the week -
As compared to per diem rates.....
I sent my stuff home via UPS/ Fed Ex on one trip...
And only carried the things I absolutely had to have.
I love it that you get to visit America!
I always bring lots of underwear and night clothes, then I only bring a few pairs of trousers, shirts and an outfit to wear if we need to dress up to dinner, church etc. You can always wear trousers for several days in a row and have one pair washed while you are wearing the other, the same with shirts. More room for things to bring home then!
I stopped by your blog today. I don't do well at packing light but mix and match stuff is probably a good tip. I visited the East Coast on a cruise and would have loved to spend more time in Boston. Great place.
